Fred Rogers would sing that song at the beginning of every episode of Mr.
Rogers neighborhood, his public television program which was produced from 1968-2000
and is still in reruns today. Since Fred Roger’s death, I have been thinking about how
that man has impacted my life and my children’s life.
Come on with me to Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood and let us learn together some of the lessons
Mr. Rogers taught us and is still teaching our children and grandchildren.
Lessons about being a good neighbor, appreciating the beauty around us, liking
ourselves just the way we are, the value of make believe and play, and to
enjoying life-be alive.
Won’t You be my Neighbor?
Did you know Fred Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister? In a way his show was
an extension of his religious beliefs. He truly followed one of Gods greatest commandments
to love your neighbor as yourself. But I liked the way he did it. Not in a loud preachy way but
with a humble, low key approach. He showed love and acceptance of all his neighbors that
visited the show and to his television audience. In a 1995 interview Rogers said "I have
really never considered myself a TV star, I always thought I was a neighbor who just came in
for a visit." Wouldn’t it be great if we really practiced that philosophy in today’s world?
There are over 1000 Iraqi immigrants in Louisville, they are our neighbors! Do you know who
your neighbors are and have you visited with them?
It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
No matter the weather, Mr. Rogers would still come in his house and say it’s a
beautiful day. Why do we think sunny, bright days are beautiful but if it’s raining it’s a dreary
day? I don’t think Mr. Rogers was talking about the weather when he said it’s a
beautiful day in the neighborhood. Mr. Rogers looked for the beauty in every
day things, every day life.
Sitting down with a neighbor, drinking tea, taking time to play, pretend, paint, and be
creative. One day of breathing normally is a beautiful day for someone with
Asthma, Bronchitis or Emphysema. One more day to enjoy the color of the sky
is a beautiful day for someone loosing his or her eyesight.
One more day with your son or daughter before they report to boot camp is a beautify day!
Think like Mr. Rogers and enjoy the beauty of this life, this day! Yes we’ve got problems,
yes there is a war going on, sure we’ve got poverty and political unrest but there are still
miracles every day if you take the time to look. Find something today to make you say
“It truly is a beautiful day in this neighborhood”!
It's You I Like
It's you I like,
It's not the things you wear,
It's not the way you do your hair--
But it's you I like
The way you are right now,
The way down deep inside you--
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys--
They're just beside you.
…Your skin, your eyes, your feelings
Whether old or new.
I hope that you'll remember
Even when you're feeling blue
That it's you I like,
It's you yourself,
It's you, it's you I like.
There is an old gospel song titled “Just as I am”. In the Christian faith it is sung as a
reminder that God loves and accepts us just as we are. Fred Rogers understood this
biblical principle and again…without being preachy…let children know he liked them just the
way they were. Some of the kids that watch his show may never have an adult say
that to them. Even we as adults need to hear “I like you just the way you are”
every once in a while, even if it’s only from ourselves. Think about that. Tonight when you
get home from work or before you go to bed look at yourself in the mirror and say “I like you
just the way you are”
Off to the Land of Make Believe
Everyone remembers that familiar sound of the trolley whistle and seeing the trolley roll across
Mr. Rogers’ kitchen off to the Land of make believe. As a teenager I remember watching
Mr. Rogers with some of my younger nieces and thinking this part of the show was so stupid.
Now that I’m older and hopefully a little bit wiser, I realize the importance of play and make
believe in our lives today. We all need a healthy release and Mr. Rogers understood
that. For children it’s pretend play and make believe. For adults we may use books of
fiction, movies and games to step into that make believe world, but isn’t it still pretend?
What do you play? What do you have fun doing. Think back on things you enjoyed
doing as a child? Do you still do some of them today? If not, why? I challenge you today to
find some time; even on your busiest day to “play” have some fun, laugh enjoy yourself!
Feed your creative spirit, that inner child that is still in all of us!
It's Such a Good Feeling to Know You're Alive
It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
It's such a happy feeling: You're growing inside.
And when you wake up ready to say,
"I think I'll make a snappy new day."
It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling,
The feeling you know that we're friends…
It truly is a good feeling when you can wake up in the morning, get out of bed
and thank God you are alive. Some of us, including myself are guilty of walking around
many days on remote, the alarm goes off…too early again…we drag out of bed, shower,
get dressed, maybe eat some breakfast or grab something on the way out the door and start
our day again. It’s the old “I’ve got to go make the donuts” mentality.
I don’t know if Mr. Rogers ever felt that way but I have a feeling it was rare. He was a man
who seemed truly to enjoy every day and really appreciate the fact that ANY day you can crawl
out of bed and face the world is truly a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
I encourage you to think fresh about the wonderful blessings and we all have in
this country. Look for reasons to appreciate the fact that you are alive and
kicking today!
Yes, your knees may ache when you go down the stairs; you may have headaches or
allergies. But if you are still able to get out of bed on your own, can breath unassisted and
don’t require a wheelchair to get around, you are fortunate indeed!
Mr. Rogers has taught us many things. My challenge to you is:
Won’t you be my neighbor? Do you know who your neighbors are and have you
visited with them?
It’s a Beautify Day in the neighborhood. Find something today to make you say
“It truly is a beautiful day in this neighborhood”.
It's you I like. Look at yourself in the mirror and say “I like you just the way you
