OK, I’ve got my list, credit cards, cash, coupons, comfy shoes and I’
ve taken two Ibuprofen-I’m ready to go. It’s Black Friday. I’ve got to hit
WalrusMart first, my husband would love that DVD player they’ve got on sale,
then on to Circus City, they have the best prices on digital cameras, I’ll get one
for each of the kids. Next over to J.C. Nickel’s for clothes for the kids, a gift for
Nana (don’t know what to get her-maybe a sweater), Papa something for his
golf game, Mom, Dad, my husband, oh yeah don’t forget to pick up something
for the gift exchange at work. Let’s go.
Vroom. What with all this traffic, it’s only 7 a.m. I can’t believe all these fools.
Money’s going to be tight this year, but I’ve got what’s left of my paycheck
after the bills were paid, we’ve got a little in the bank and a little available on
the credit card. I’ve got to get these bargains to save some money.
Finally I find a space, “What’s up with that old women in that big car, doesn’t
she know how to back out of a space, she’s too old to be driving, she should
be in a nursing home”.
Wow, look at all the people. Electronics-were is it? Great, they have
the DVD player I want. Might as well look around while I’m here, house shoes,
they’ve got some nice ones, but I’ll wait and see what’s on sale at J.C. Nichol’
s. I need some laundry detergent and some air freshener. I love this
Christmas song, “Oh Holy night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the
night of our dear savior’s birth…” Hmmm, um, hmm, um. Better
pick up some napkins and paper towels too. Oh, my Lord, look at this
line, there’s not a cashier open anywhere, and ten people in every line, it’s
going to take two hours to check out. Look at that cute baby, what a blessing.
I wish my kids were still small, I remember I loved to buy them all the fun toys
and cute baby clothes. Gone are the days, they’re 21 and 15 now and
everything they want is expensive. It seems every year they want more and
more.
Finally I’m checked out, it only took 30 minutes. On to Circus City, I’ll cut
through the neighborhood and go into the shopping center through the back
entrance that should save about 45 minutes of sitting in traffic on the Mall
road. Look at all the beautiful homes decorated so nicely. I wish we had
more money to spend on decorations, I love Christmas time, when every
thing seems magical. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
” Crap everyone else had the same idea, traffic is backed up for
miles. This is going to take longer then I thought.
Finally, I have to park in the back of the shopping lot and it’s starting to rain.
Great. Circus City is living up to its name, it is a Circus, full of crazy fools
like me, wondering around, arms full of items. I’ll pick up some CD’s
for the kids and one for my Honey. Darn, they’re sold out of the digital
cameras they had on sale. I’ll have to check the ads on Sunday. Another line,
but it’s moving pretty fast, running out of cash have to go to credit. Now it is on
to the mall and J.C. Nickel’s.
Oh Dear Sweet Mother of Jesus, this Mall needs more parking
spaces;
I’ve been around twice and finally find one close to the front. What luck!
Will you look at this crowd? I believe everyone in town is at the Mall.
How do people have so much money? They’ve got arm loads of bags
and packages. The Mall decorations are so beautiful. Santa is here and the
children are lined up to tell him their wishes, babies are crying, toddlers are
crawling and Moms and Dads are snapping pictures and looking so proud.
The Christmas tree is tastefully decorated, oh sorry the “Holiday tree”.
Onto J.C. Nickel’s, the clothing department is a mess and the sale racks
are already picked over. After searching I got the house shoes, some
clothes, and a nice purse for Nana. I’m getting a headache and my feet are
hurting, better find a water fountain and take two more Ibuprofen. I think there’
s one upstairs by the rest rooms. OK, I’m almost done, I didn't find
everything I needed, but I’ve run out of money, I’m tired, hungry and
I’m going home. I don’t know how other folks do it, shopping all day. I just
can’t stand shopping this long. Where’s the restroom. This is crazy,
I hate this holiday, why am I doing this, what am I doing here, I’m
going home.
As I leave the restroom and drag my purchases and tired self to the
escalator, I notice over in the Holiday gift section, a young woman
holding her young child up to a beautiful crèche. I pause to look as I
hear the mother quietly speak to her daughter, “See this manger, see
baby Jesus. The wise men are bringing gifts to Jesus. This the reason
we give each other gifts, because God gave us the greatest gift of
all, His son, Jesus Christ. That is why we celebrate Christmas”.
OK…Alright God…thanks for that reminder, I hear ya.
None of this other stuff really matters, the sales, the deals,
the “things”. It is really all about you and the greatest gift
ever. I get it now. Forgive me for forgetting as I rushed to
get more things, forgive me for cursing at the traffic, the old
women in the big car and the cashiers.
I left the mall humbled and quite, my mind still as the line
from Silent Night came into my head,
“…all is calm, all is bright”.
Peace.
